Why listen

A very long opening and smaller pieces give fragmented sounds different scales in which to form a continuous experience.

Album story

One track occupies almost half of 94diskont. After the twenty-four minutes of Do While, Store Check contracts the scale to four minutes, and Line Extension makes it smaller again. The difference affects how attention works: a listener who has remained inside one surface begins to notice the borders between pieces. Local repetition and the shape of the whole record operate at strikingly different distances.

On this 1995 recording Oval consisted of Markus Popp, Sebastian Oschatz and Frank Metzger, rather than the later solo project. Its fractured sounds can suggest a malfunction left running unattended. Popp instead described deliberate work turning apparently unusable fragments into songs. The origin of a sound and the choice of how to arrange it are separate matters. Human decisions remain present inside a texture that can initially seem impersonal.

Listening to the surface

Treating a small click as musical material changes the distinction between foreground and background. A brief recurring sound can provide a reference while longer resonances occupy the gaps. Rather than waiting for a succession of new melodies, follow what changes around something already familiar. Discontinuous sounds need not produce a wholly discontinuous experience; their relationships can become the continuity.

From installation to recording

Do While originated in the multi-speaker installation Wohnton. The stereo album does not reproduce that entire physical setting. It offers another way to follow layers exchanging attention within a recording. Across its long duration, the sound that first seemed most conspicuous can become familiar enough to recede. Time changes the listener’s relationship to an otherwise recognisable surface.

The returning name

Cross Selling expands the middle to about six minutes, before Commerce Server and Shop In Store. A shorter Do While closes the seven-track sequence. Its returning name does not promise the same duration as the opening. The contrast between twenty-four minutes and fewer than five gives a remembered texture another frame. That asymmetry matters more than the simple count of seven titles.

The album through its tracks

Compare the long opening with the compact third track, then hear how the short closing Do While changes the scale of the remembered material.

  1. Do While

This selection is the first track, lasting about twenty-four minutes and five seconds, rather than the shorter final track carrying the same service title. Knowing its scale changes the way a small returning sound can be heard: it need not behave like a completed refrain. A familiar element may gradually move into the background, leaving another layer available for attention. Start by remembering one conspicuous sound and follow whether it remains prominent. The installation origin provides a spatial context without implying that this recording reproduces every original loudspeaker. The eventual transition into Store Check supplies another useful measure of how much room the opening has occupied.

  2. Line Extension

The third track lasts about three minutes and six seconds, a much smaller frame than the opening. That does not make it a disposable appendix. Store Check has already reduced the scale, and this further contraction makes the borders of a piece more noticeable. Follow the relationship between short appearances and the resonance left behind them instead of trying to identify a conventional instrument for every sound. Cross Selling then expands the next track beyond six minutes, creating another proportion to compare. These shorter pieces prevent the album from being defined solely by its long beginning; they divide the memory of that opening into different-sized spaces.
