Album story

TIMELY!! moves quickly, but its bright surface contains more than one emotional temperature. Anri opens the December 1983 album with a new take of CAT’S EYE, then follows it with WINDY SUMMER and STAY BY ME. That sequence establishes both momentum and a singer whose clear phrasing remains easy to follow through the instrumental detail. Rain, loneliness and a closing goodnight gradually complicate the apparent holiday atmosphere.

Listening in album order changes the relationship between the familiar songs. After the opening trio, A HOPE FROM SAD STREET and YOU ARE NOT ALONE lead towards the sixth track, I CAN’T STOP THE LONELINESS. The original programme eventually closes with GOOD-NIGHT FOR YOU. This is a sequence of changing relationships and distances, rather than a continuous soundtrack to an imaginary beach.

Production as a collaboration

In his JASRAC interview, Toshiki Kadomatsu recalled asking Tetsuji Hayashi and Chinfa Kan to supply music and lyrics for the follow-up to CAT’S EYE. His stated Motown direction helps explain how I CAN’T STOP THE LONELINESS combines forward motion with distress. It describes a creative brief, not proof of a particular borrowed song. The collaboration also cautions against attributing every part of the album to its producer alone.

A voice that keeps each song legible

WINDY SUMMER lets phrases open out, while STAY BY ME makes a short appeal feel immediate. Anri remains recognisable across those differences. Her clear beginnings and extended vowels give the melody a distinct shape among the instrumental responses. A first listen can stay with the voice; another can follow the bass movement or the brief sounds answering a phrase. The songs remain welcoming without becoming interchangeable.

The original goodnight and an added memory

The available edition appends Remember Summer Days after the original ten tracks. Hear GOOD-NIGHT FOR YOU as the intended farewell before treating the extra song as another chapter. That distinction preserves the album’s proportions. Its brisk entrance, changes of emotional shade and final leave-taking become easier to hear when the two famous singles are returned to their places within the complete programme.

The album through its tracks

Hear the opening trio together, compare the sixth track, and continue to the original closing GOOD-NIGHT FOR YOU.

  1. WINDY SUMMER

Coming directly after CAT’S EYE, this song gives the album a second surge of motion. Kadomatsu wrote its words and music and arranged it, but Anri’s phrasing makes the sense of openness immediately personal. Notice how a vocal line can extend while shorter instrumental gestures prepare the next phrase. The parts do not need to move in identical lengths to feel connected. Start with the bright chorus, then return to the clipped sounds around the voice. Continuing into STAY BY ME reveals a further change: an expansive atmosphere gives way to a more direct appeal. Even the album’s cheerful opening section contains several distinct kinds of address.

  2. 悲しみがとまらない I CAN’T STOP THE LONELINESS

A sorrowful title meets an arrangement that keeps urging the song forwards. Kadomatsu’s account of a Motown-inspired brief offers context for that productive tension, while the music and lyrics belong to Hayashi and Kan respectively. Anri makes the feeling explicit without allowing the melody to dissolve into an indistinct lament. Hear how clearly the title returns, then compare the melodic approach immediately before it. The urgency comes from the persistence of the appeal as much as from vocal force. In the original running order this is track six, renewing the album’s momentum after YOU ARE NOT ALONE rather than functioning only as an isolated familiar hit.
