Album story

The abrasive opening voice and the long final performance belong to the same record, but ask for different kinds of attention. Sanullim’s third album, released in 1978, fills its running time with only five tracks. Instead of waiting for a quick return to a familiar chorus, follow the changing weight of the rhythm and the texture of the guitar.

Sanullim were three brothers: Kim Changwan, Kim Changhoon and Kim Changik. This album followed their debut and second record in rapid succession. Changhoon’s writing and opening lead vocal matter to its identity; reducing the band to Changwan alone misses that contribution. Nor is this simply a tidier, easier entry point than its predecessors. Compact songs and extended electric playing pull against each other.

A different voice at the door

My Heart foregrounds the rough edge of Changhoon’s delivery. Without a Word and Becoming a Bird offer more compact song forms, but the opening has already changed your expectations. Alternate between following the tune and attending to the friction around it. The accompaniment can then sound like support for a song or like an event in its own right, depending on where you place your attention.

Duration as a way of listening

Empty Night runs close to nine minutes, while You Are Already Me exceeds eighteen. These lengths can feel remote if you are merely waiting for the next track. Use bass and drums as reference points instead, following changes in the guitar’s density and movement above them. Extended time becomes a way to hear relationships within the performance. The finale is one continuous track, not an invented suite of separately titled movements.

Reception revisited

A 2008 Kyunghyang retrospective placed the album at number 73 in its hundred-album series and contrasted reported initial commercial disappointment with its later experimental reputation. That retrospective is not a verified 1978 sales ledger or release-day review. A remaster campaign announced in 2022 led to new digital editions in 2023. The linked five-track edition does not carry the 2023 Remastered label, and should not be asserted to share its mastering. Distinguishing the original programme from later audio work helps keep the focus on the record’s still-unusual proportions rather than on rarity alone.

The album through its tracks

Use the lower rhythmic movement as an anchor while following changes in guitar texture.

  1. My Heart (My Soul Is A Wasteland)

The Korean title is Nae Maeum, also associated with the longer phrase Nae Maeumeun Hwangmuji. Changhoon’s lead creates a different entrance from the voice familiar on much of the earlier material. Start with the edges of the notes rather than trying to translate every word. The band maintains its force while the vocal seems to scrape across its surface. On another pass, attend to the repeated movement beneath the singer and notice when it feels firmer or more exposed. Loudness alone does not explain the effect: vocal grain and instrumental continuity work together. This is a useful preparation for an album that will also let extended playing disrupt the scale of a compact song.

  2. You Are Already Me

Eighteen minutes need not be an endurance test. Begin with the lower rhythmic movement, then shift your focus when the guitar seems to take the foreground. A pattern can remain recognisable while its density and accents change. The track occupied an entire side of the original LP, a helpful context for its refusal to hurry towards a short-song conclusion. Written by Changhoon, it also makes his distinct contribution to the band audible. You do not need to assign a plot to every shift: follow one part on a first listen and another on the next. A short preview can introduce the texture, but cannot stand in for that developing relationship across the complete performance.
