Why listen
Springy rhythm, rougher vocal grain and sustained melody give one band several distinct ways of addressing the listener.

Album story
The clipped movement of 어쩌다 마주친 그대 can become familiar quickly, but other songs let the voice linger and change the scale of the setting. Songolmae’s second album is rewarding as a meeting of personalities within a band. The physical force of its playing and the accessibility of its melodies do not have to cancel each other out.
Released in 1982, this South Korean rock album places the contrasting voices of Bae Chul-soo and Koo Chang-mo at its centre. Music&New’s later reissue notes describe a reorganised lineup that included Koo and guitarist Kim Jung-sun from the campus band Black Tetra. Retrospective praise in those notes is distinct from contemporary reception. The ten recordings themselves offer concrete comparisons of vocal texture, rhythmic placement and melodic length.
Two approaches to a phrase
Koo wrote and sang the opening song, whose returning short phrases invite attention to their spring. In 그대는 나는, Bae’s delivery changes the feel of words and the time a melody occupies. Rather than assigning each singer one adjective, notice how a phrase ends and where the next begins. The surrounding space can change even within the same band. That variety encourages movement through the album.
Keep listening beyond the familiar entry
우리들 and 다시 한번 lead towards 세상만사, extending the record beyond the opening track’s rhythmic character. Later, 하다못해 이 가슴을, 모두 다 사랑하리 and 빨리 빨리 offer different spans of breath. If you usually follow the guitars, listen for what fills a vocal gap. If you remember only melodies, choose a repeated figure underneath and notice where it gains emphasis. The connections between familiar songs matter too.
Identify the edition without rewriting it
The linked digital release has ten tracks corresponding to the programme documented by the Korean service and the reissued LP. Track nine combines 내 마음의 꽃/길지 않는 시간이었네 in one entry. English service labels are identifiers, not asserted official translations. The 2023 LP reissue and later reunion concerts remain distinct from this 1982 album. Begin with a song you recognise, then stay for the transition after it: the record becomes larger than the memory of an individual hit.
The album through its tracks
Compare where the singers finish a phrase, then follow the band’s response in the space that follows.
어쩌다 마주친 그대
Short melodic shapes and a recurring rhythm fit together while the voice springs within them. Instead of relying only on recognition of the refrain, listen to the small interval between a phrase ending and its next entrance. Music&New’s reissue notes identify Koo Chang-mo as writer and singer. The English service label You That Meet Unexpectedly identifies this same opening track; it does not denote a different English-language song. Follow the vocal first, then choose the low repetition or clipped accompaniment. Even when the voice extends a phrase, smaller divisions continue underneath. A familiar song becomes a way to hear the band’s interactions again.

The voice stays in place differently from the opener, leaving more attention on the melodic line. The reissue notes single out Bae Chul-soo’s vocal and the lyrical melody. Go beyond calling the tone rough: compare a word pushed forward with one allowed to continue. The band’s movement between phrases supplies another current beneath that vocal surface. This is the third track, identified as You & Me on the English service. Compare it directly with the opening song to hear two approaches within one album. Rather than choosing a better singer, notice the different intervals and temperatures that their deliveries bring to the sequence.
